Dems push smart tech handgun rules By Tim Devaney - 06/02/15 01:07 PM EDT The Hill Democrats are looking to place new restrictions on who can use handguns. http://thehill.com/regulation/legislation/243756-dems-pushing-new-handgun-restrictionsThe Handgun Trigger Safety Act introduced Tuesday by Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) aims to block criminals and children from using guns that do not belong to them. Gun dealers would be required to install smart gun technology that fires only if it recognizes the shooter, such as the person who purchased the gun or someone they designate as an authorized user. Some smart gun technologies use fingerprints, while others require the shooter to wear a bluetooth bracelet or receive a microchip implant that unlocks the gun. The lawmakers also introduced a second bill that would provide $10 million annually in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to research gun violence prevention and firearms safety. That won't fly, not an inch. When such a gun was invented and was ready for sale not too long ago, the NRA (read, the Gun Industry) went into full panic mode. Billions of $$$ in inventory and tooling were about to be obsolete. This. Must. Not. Happen!
The inventor's masterpiece was put on a shelf somewhere, never again to see the light of day.

Yah, this tech (gun-specific shooter ID) is destined for the slag heap. Unless, of course, the Donald should suffer some gun-related tragedy in his own person, in which case, he could easily Tweet forth his eminent approval. That still might not be enough to get it past the NRA, but it would give them & their Congress-critters pause.
& the ultimate countermeasure for this kind of system is too easy.

Based on past rhetoric of the NRA and conservatives, in general, such technology should be welcomed. Who hasn't heard the refrain, "If guns were outlawed, only outlaws would have guns". Largely, this is based on the idea that "outlaws" would just disregard any regulations saying they shouldn't have guns, and, rather than be exposed when they purchase one, would just steal however many guns they want. However, with "smart gun" technology, stealing a gun wouldn't do them any good, unless they were just looking for a rather unwieldy club -- the gun just plain wouldn't fire, for them.
The negative reactions the NRA and conservatives have displayed, toward this technology, merely continues to point out the hollowness and hypocrisy of their public campaigns against any and all attempts to control gun violence. In fact, the more violent our society becomes, the more guns will be sold, and the happier the NRA will be.
All with the enthusiastic support of American conservatives.

In this world, a person can DEMAND respect ........ or COMMAND it.
The former will seldom - if ever - achieve the latter.

Indeed, why do so many domestic abusers (some of them law enforcement officers) slip through the courts with their gun rights intact? Enforce the law!
