Watching Saudi Arabia spend hundreds of billions of dollars on sophisticated weapons in the past decade, many friends and foes of the oil-rich kingdom often wondered to what extent it would be capable of using them.
Now, there is an answer. By sustaining nearly a month of intensive airstrikes in Yemen, Saudi Arabia has shown that—from a purely military standpoint—it can lead a lengthy and complicated campaign.
It’s still far from clear that Riyadh will achieve its ultimate goal of rolling back the pro-Iranian Houthi forces that have taken over much of Yemen. The military campaign, the first that Saudi Arabia has led since 1934, has suffered setbacks—most notably an unexpected refusal by traditional ally Pakistan to join the coalition. Saudi Arabia launched air strikes in response to the power grab by the Houthis, who they accuse of acting as puppets of Iran, the kingdom’s regional rival.
The announced end of Saudi Arabia’s bombing campaign in Yemen may provide a window for thousands of U.S. citizens to leave the war-torn nation. Yet the State Department shows no sign it will begin rescuing the thousands of Yemeni-Americans there, drawing ire from the Arab-American community.
A fleet of Iranian warships arrived near the southern coast of Yemen on Wednesday in a move likely to add greater tension in a developing U.S.-Iranian standoff in the region, according Iranian military leaders.

A Saudi Prince has come under fire on social media after reportedly promising luxury Bentley cars to fighter pilots involved in bombing strikes in Yemen. The Prince, who has three million followers on Twitter, reportedly wrote: "In appreciation of their role in this operation, I'm honoured to offer 100 Bentley cars to the 100 Saudi fighter pilots The U.S. Navy is sending the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt to the waters near Yemen in response to reported arms deliveries to Houthis rebels by Iran.
The warships are prepared to block Iran from reaching the impoverished country located on the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Last week Iran reportedly dispatched an armada of seven to nine ships to Yemen. U.S. defense officials characterized the mission as an effort to arm the Houthis.
In January Houthi rebels seized the presidential palace in the capital, Sana’a, and ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi who is supported by the United States and Saudi Arabia. In March, Saudi Arabia and its Gulf emirate allies began conducting airstrikes against the Houthis. Not exactly known for truthfulness, U.S. neocons have been trying to reassure the American people that sinking a negotiated deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program would be a painless proposition, but at least one prominent neocon, Joshua Muravchik, acknowledges that the alternative will be war – and he likes the idea. The U.S. will reserve the right to use military force to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon even if a deal is reached Iran’s nuclear program, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday. We thought that Iran getting nuclear weapons was the main reason we were thinking of bombing them. So if a peace deal is signed with the U.S., why are we still talking about bombing them?
